Online Counselling vs Face-to-Face: Which Is Right for You?

10 June 2026

When most people picture counselling, they imagine sitting in a quiet room, face-to-face with a therapist. It's the image we've seen in films and on television. And for a long time, it was the only option. But online counselling has changed the landscape — and the research shows it's just as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns.

Does Online Counselling Actually Work?

This is the question I hear most often. And the answer, based on a growing body of research, is a clear yes. Studies consistently show that remote therapy — whether by video, telephone, email, or messaging — produces outcomes equivalent to face-to-face therapy for anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and a wide range of other concerns.

The key ingredient in effective therapy isn't the room you're sitting in. It's the therapeutic relationship — the trust, understanding, and collaboration between you and your counsellor. That relationship can be built just as effectively through a screen or a phone call.

The Advantages of Online Counselling

No Travel, No Waiting Rooms

One of the most immediate benefits is the removal of logistical barriers. No commuting across town, no sitting in a waiting room, no finding parking. You can attend your session from wherever you feel most comfortable.

Access from Anywhere

If you live in a rural area of South Wales, or simply don't have a counsellor nearby who feels like the right fit, online counselling opens up your options. Geography is no longer a barrier to finding the right therapist.

Flexibility and Format Choice

Online counselling offers something face-to-face therapy can't: a choice of formats. Video sessions provide the visual connection of traditional therapy. Telephone sessions allow you to talk freely without being on camera. Email and WhatsApp therapy give you time to reflect and express yourself in writing — which some people find far more natural than speaking.

Comfort and Safety

For many people, especially those with social anxiety or trauma, being in their own familiar environment can actually make it easier to open up. You can hold a comforting object, sit in your favourite chair, or have a cup of tea — small things that help you feel grounded.

When Face-to-Face Might Be Preferable

Online counselling isn't perfect for everyone or every situation. There are some circumstances where in-person therapy may be more appropriate:

  • If you're in acute crisis and need immediate, in-person support
  • If you don't have access to a private space for sessions
  • If you find technology stressful and it would interfere with the therapeutic process

However, for the vast majority of people and concerns, online counselling is a highly effective option.

Choosing the Right Format for You

One of the beauties of online counselling is that you're not locked into one format. Many clients start with video sessions and then experiment with other options. Some blend formats — a video session one week, a phone call the next. The key is finding what works for you.

Here's a quick guide to the formats I offer:

Video Counselling

The closest experience to face-to-face therapy. You see and hear your counsellor in real time, from a space that's comfortable for you. Ideal if you value visual connection.

Telephone Counselling

All the benefits of a live conversation without the camera. Some clients find it easier to open up without being seen. You can walk, sit, or lie down — whatever helps you feel at ease.

Email Therapy

An asynchronous format where you write at your own pace and receive a full therapeutic response within 48 hours. Particularly suited to those who process emotions better through writing, or who need maximum flexibility.

WhatsApp Therapy

A live, text-based session held within a 50-minute messaging window. Combines the structure of a traditional session with the accessibility of messaging.

Taking the First Step

If you're considering counselling but unsure about the online format, the free consultation is the perfect opportunity to explore it. It's a relaxed, no-obligation conversation where we can discuss your needs and you can ask any questions about how remote therapy works.

At Kaizen Counselling, I offer all four formats to clients across Caerphilly, Cardiff, Newport, and the wider South Wales area — and throughout the UK. Wherever you are, support is within reach.
